Set in a Yorkshire mill town during World War I, The Choral follows a struggling local choral society after many of its male singers leave for the front. To keep the group alive, the committee recruits an eclectic mix of townspeople and hires the enigmatic Dr. Henry Guthrie as conductor. As war, loss, and uncertainty weigh heavily on the community, music becomes a source of hope, healing, and unity. Through rehearsals for a performance of Edward Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius, the villagers discover resilience, friendship, and the power of collective art in troubled times.
Reviews:
- “Unpredictable and emotionally powerful… Ralph Fiennes anchors a moving portrait of a community finding solace in music during wartime.” — Glenn Kenny, The New York Times
- “A handsome and affecting drama that sidesteps the usual feel-good clichés of British period pieces and finds something more honest and bittersweet.” — Guy Lodge, Variety
- “Its finest moments come through the music itself, capturing how collective singing can unite a fractured community.” — Critical consensus summarized by The Week
